For the past three weeks many customers have complained about the iPhone 4’s reception issues, and many Apple critics have jumped on Apple’s lack of urgency in dealing with the problem. The question I raise today is wether or not we’re making a mountain out of a mole hill; I’m no expert in business, but I feel like I understand why the public feels that Apple, a multi-billion dollar company, is shuffling their feet on the problem while Apple is right on schedule in their minds.

Let’s go back and reiterate that Apple is a multi-billion dollar company, and a company can only become that big by having a reputation for high quality products, which means that since Apple sold 1.7 million units in the first week and local Apple Stores can’t keep them in stock, the pros of the phone are out weighing the cons. Let’s be honest; the iPhone 4 is a fantastic upgrade to a phenomenal 3G S. It’s a simple equation:

pros > cons = happy people’s wallets > angry people’s criticsim

So Why make announcements, recall the phones, and give away free bumper cases for? They shouldn’t and they won’t. If they do that, then they are blemishing their reputation that we established in earlier. They want the attention; they want the bad press; therefore, people like yourself will research all about the iPhone 4 and learn all the pros and just say ‘I would get it, but it has one problem’, and then Apple will come out of no where and fixes the problem and sell a million more iPhone 4s. So instead of filing lawsuits let’s understand that you bought a high quality product that is top in the market.

Ever since the release of the new iPhone 4, consumers have been encountering reception issues; such as dropped calls, and display issues. What will Apple decide to do?

There has been several videos, blogs, and concerned emails sent to Steve Jobs and Apple Inc., but is the consumer’s voice really heard? A few days after the iPhone4 was officially released, a concerned customer was asking Steve Jobs if there was any future plans for Apple to fix these reception problems. Jobs replied back with, “Just avoid holding it that way”. What way? How are you supposed to hold the phone? One dead giveaway that the iPhone 4 had reception problems during testing was the available “Bumper Case” that Apple was selling at the launch of the phone.

I truly believe that Apple knew about these previous issue and wanted to provide a quality case to avoid these issues from customers. The case is stylish, but is not the true reason behind it. There has been leaked Apple care documents explaining to the staff how to “deal” with customers when asking/confronting you about the iPhone4 reception problems. You can see this below:

As well as reception problems accruing at opening day, their were several ticked-off customers when Apple did not release the iPhone 4 in white, Black ONLY. Apple states that the new iPhone 4, in white, will be re-released in mid-July. No exact date. After researching several blogs, websites, videos, and emails, Apple has released a statement that the iPhone4 reception problems are not the antenna, but the software. Supposedly, Apple has slipped up on the reception “bars” ever since the 1st gen iPhone. Apple says they are in the process of fixing the bug and will re-realeas the latest iPhone software with the new, and improved, software to increase call quality and overall better reception. We will see…

I hope you have enjoyed this blog over the reception issues/White iPhone4. Feel free to comment below with your take on what Apple is doing or needs to do…Hopefully they will listen to thier customers…

The first thing that you are going to notice about the new iMac is the screen, and it is a beauty. I cannot compare it to the previous generation iMac’s screen, but from what I have read, the new iMac’s screen is similar to the Apple Cinema Display. So far the computer has been performing great. The 3.06 GHz processer is a welcomed improvement over my 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro. I did not order the Quad Core version because I was planning on getting the 2.8 GHz iMac before Apple announced their new product line, so this was a nice upgrade to my original choice. I just do not need the power that the Quad Core iMac provides, so after talking with an Apple associate, I decided the 3.06 GHz was just fine for my youtube editing needs.

I’m sure many of you have heard about the flash problems in the new iMac’s. The first day I received my iMac, I did not experience any lag with flash. The next day, however, was a different story. I woke up my iMac from sleep, went to play a youtube video, and the video was stuttering as well as the sound. I went to Apple’s support forums and found a possible fix. I uninstalled the flash player plug-in, and then downloaded and re-installed the plug-in. I am happy to report that I have not had the problem since, but I might be jinxing myself right now, as I have only had the iMac for a week. Unfortunately, this fix does not seem to work for everybody. Members of the forums are still reporting flash lag, after re-installing the plug-in. Hopefully Apple will address this issue soon.

The new iMac’s come standard with a wireless keyboard, and the new magic mouse. The wireless keyboard has been around for some time, but this was my first experience with it. The battery seems to last a long time, one week and two days later, I still have 89% battery left. The only thing I do not like about the wireless keyboard is the missing USB ports, which the wired keyboard provides. I will most likely be ordering a wired keyboard, because it can sometimes be difficult getting to the back of my iMac to plug in USB devices.

The magic mouse definitely takes some getting use to. At first I did not like the mouse. It felt uncomfortable in my hand and the speed of the mouse seemed a little sluggish. After a week of use, I do not even notice any of these problems. The touch sensitive part of the mouse works great, but do not expect it to feel like a MacBook track pad. The surfaces feel different; the magic mouse is a little more “sticky” than the smooth track pad on the MacBooks. I hope apple adds more functionality to the touch sensors on the mouse, I would love to activate expose using the mouse. Apple claims that the magic mouse gets four months of battery life. I am skeptical, as of this review I have 77% battery left. It is only natural for the mouse battery to drain quickly, because it is used all the time. The mouse does have a switch to turn it off, but it takes 35 seconds to be discovered by the iMac once it is turned back on. You can imagine how frustrating that can be, when you just want to get on and use your computer quickly.

The new iMac’s are great. The only problem I ran into was the flash lag, but thankfully it was easily fixed (knock on wood). I will have another update on the iMac in about a month. If you want to see my unboxing, you can check that out at the end of this post. I am also looking forward to reading some Quad Core iMac reviews, hopefully they will ship soon. Anyone order a quad core? Or planning on picking one up? Thanks for reading guys.

The little brother of the iMac, the cousin of the MacBook, the Mac mini is the often overlooked desktop computer of the Apple Macintosh line up. Originally launched in 2005, it was intended to be a less expensive method for first time Mac “switchers”. Priced at $599, to this day it is still the cheapest (legal) method of owning a Mac, yet still had not caught on in the same way the iMac or MacBook has. It just doesn’t have the sex appeal of the iMac with its massive all-in-one display, or the portability of the MacBook, leaving some analyst to predict its demise nearly every product cycle. Yet, somehow, it has managed to survive, but probably not in the way Apple originally intended. Instead of becoming the perfect Mac for first-timers, it has become the preferred choice for user of OS X looking for a compact second machine, such as the so called “Kitchen Computer” or Home Theater PC. In fact, that is the reason I picked up one myself last week after Tuesday’s refresh . However, in the interest of offering an in-depth review, I have used my shinny new Mac mini as my main computer since then, running it through its paces on everything from basic browsing to large file video editing.

Let’s start with what $599 will buy you. In the box you’ll get the machine itself, power supply, standard software disk, and a MiniDVI to DVI cable… and that’s it (you can see my unboxing here if you are interested). No keyboard, monitor, or mouse. It really is meant as a “replace your Windows PC but keep your other stuff” machine. The first thing that you really notice is that it truly is miniature, measuring 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) squared and 2 inches (5.1 cm) tall while weighing only 2.9 pounds (1.31 kg). It of course maintains the form factor that Apple is known for, using its design to transition effortlessly from computer to conversation piece. In fact, when I first showed it to my girlfriend, she assumed it was a Time Capsule and was amazed that an entire computer could fit into such a small box.

So what has Apple managed to cram into this tiny space? Well, with the new upgrades from last week, I think the mini can now be considered a real contender as a primary desktop computer for the average user. The base line model comes equipped with a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM, and a 160GB hardrive. Admittedly, these specs don’t blow your mind as they are on par with mid-range laptops, but for the vast majority of people this is really all the power they would need. Even for the “prosumers” out there, I had no problems handling large image files in Photoshop CS4 and editing video clips with iMovie. Of course, it’s not as fast as my iMac (that has nearly double the power), but it got the job done without any crashes or unreasonable processing times. Speaking of video, the graphics are supplied by an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M that is capable of pushing to dual screens through the Mini-DVI and Mini-DisplayPort outputs on the back of the box. The graphics card was able to handle Call Of Duty 4 and HD movies on my 103” screen without any issues. If I have one complaint about the baseline specs, however, it’s going to have to be storage. With only 160GB of space, you can easily start to run out of room in the age of iTunes Movies and 10 Megapixal digital cameras. You can upgrade to 320GB or 500GB for $100 and $200 respectively or even save yourself a few bucks and buy a SATA hard drive to do it yourself, but it would have been great for at least the 320GB to be standard.

Ultimately, if you are looking at breaking into the world of Mac without breaking your budget I would really take a hard look at the mini if I were you. You are getting all the benefits of OS X and the included iLife program suite at half the price you would pay for an iMac and can even keep using your favorite monitor (or save up for that Cinema Display down the road). For those who already use and love a Mac, well the mini is a great way to spread that love around the house (okay, that sounds a little dirty, but you know what I mean), with a design that is small enough for the kitchen or bedroom while being stylish enough for your home theater.

On October 20th, 2009, Apple Inc. released some super awesome new products. Replacing the “Mighty Mouse” is the “Magic Mouse,” which is what I’ll be doing a review on today. Other products released were a 27 inch iMac and a smaller 21.5 inches, a new white unibody MacBook, and a new Mac Mini.

THE MAGIC MOUSE – INTRO

Apple has officially released the world’s first multi-touch mouse. Yes, multi-touch, just like you’re used to on the MacBook Pro and also the iPhone/iPod Touch.
Simply using one or two fingers, you can zoom in and out, scroll up and down, side-to-side, 360˚ scrolling, and of course, clicking.

THE PROS

The Magic Mouse is by far the sexiest looking mouse. Ever.
Apple never seems to disappoint when it comes to looks, but let’s see how it performs.

This mouse connects wirelessly to your Mac using Bluetooth technology, taking up less space than other wireless mice that force you to plug in a receiver.

Magic Mouse is powered by two AA batteries, lasting up to four months, according to Apple.

It has a nice design. My brother told me, “it looks like a bar of soap,” which it does. On the top is a nice whitish, clear plastic.

On the bottom there is a power switch, battery ports, and a lovely Apple logo.

Tracking on the mouse is very smooth. It has two little black bars on the bottom to make it “Glide” on whatever surface you may be using.

There is no indication of where the buttons are, and, well, that’s because the whole thing is a button. The mouse smart, a little too smart. Tap the left corner, you left click, tap the right, you right, or secondary, click.

Scrolling is super easy as well. Just use your fingers and swipe up, down, and side-to-side.
Flicking your fingers fast scrolls to the top or bottom faster.
Be carefully not to accidentally right or left click while scrolling to fast.

Swiping side-to-side is a bit uncomfortable. You have to the down the mouse with your other fingers, otherwise you just swipe the mouse out of place.

THE CONS

You can’t actually “touch” to click, like most trackpads.

The multi-touch cannot use more than three fingers, which limits what you can actually do with it.

My brother has had the mouse for two days, and it already has a couple scratches.
Clearly not scratch-proof.

CONCLUSION

Overall, I think this is a million times better than the Mighty Mouse, and I highly recommend it. Plus, at only $69, why not get such an amazing multi-touch mouse?

On October 20, 2009, Apple released some great new products that have been going around the rumor mill for almost one month! It was time; the iMacs, Consumer-level Macbooks and the Mighty Mice all recieved significant updates. Today in this blog, I will tell you how this update brought consistency, attention and how it all came just in time. Consistency is one thing that you will now see when you visit the Apple Store. The design and performance of the Apple Computers are consistent; Think about it…the iMac, Macbook Pro and Air Models have sleek brushed aluminum feel to them. All Notebooks are unibody and the iMacs are superb in screen real-estate and performance. Battery life and environmental standards are all high and healthy. Today’s update solidified the realization that when you’re buying a mac, the products are going to have the same quality and sexiness, which to me is important when buying a computer. Apple brings this to the Table.

Apple has released their products at a wonderful time; right before the huge release of Windows 7, the new and improved operating system (for PC computers) which has for the most part received good reviews. I think Apple had this event planned all along, for they wanted to ‘wow’ their customers and the tech community with stunning quality products to take light way from Microsoft’s next big thing. But let’s not forget Christmas. I don’t personally see anymore new products coming out before Christmas, thus Apple has their holiday lineup ready. They have produced products such as the new iMac, stunning Laptops and even Magic in the Mouse to have people putting Apple at the Top of their Wish List!!!!

Comment Below and tell me what you think about the New update and if it was a success. I thank you for reading and hopefully enjoying

Story:

Rumors have it, that Apple could be supporting 6-core processing STANDARD with their new Mac Pro desktop releasing sometime in 2010. Intel, Apples CPU manufacture, has announced recently a new line of processors code named “Gulftown”. Intel’s 32nm chips have a reported 12mb L3 cache, and 12 threads per cpu(6). This is great news for anyone in the media bussiness, because when Apple comes out with single CPU machines, they come out with dual CPU machines. Could this mean a new 12-core processing beast?! We’re looking at a time frame of the first quarter of 2010. Exciting stuff if you ask me. Price points have not been released by Apple or even Intel… we’ll have to wait for those.

My thoughts:

Will this really be necessary? You think 8-core machines would be sufficient for most tasks for even the production companies, but this could be a good move for Apple. Personally, I think Apple will follow through with this one-hundred percent. Apple has always been known stay on the right track with their hardware, operating system, design, and all their products. Keeping up with technology is what they’re best at, so I think their is a very good chance we could see an update to the Mac Pro, as it is needing some updating anyways.

Apple could also lose Mac Pro purchases if and when they release this “new” model. Some people, most people… don’t even need 4-cores, so why would they need 6 or 12-cores? This will be geared more toward you’re professional group of Mac users. Pricing shouldn’t be too bad at all for something like this. Everytime anything is upgraded internally with Mac’s, you see the price stay the same or even decrease when new technology is added. Not only has Apple made a good habit with that in general, but every time technology changes, the old stuff loses value.

What are your thoughts, let me know in the description!

A review of the Developer's Release of Google's Chrome browser for a Mac.

Chrome is the Internet browser developed by Google first released for the Windows operating system in 2008. Mac and Linux users, however, have yet to be able to take this browser for a spin. Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said that Chrome for Mac will be available in “a couple of month”, but, lets face it, most Mac users don’t like to wait for the latest tech—they want it now. Well, don’t fear loyal MacintoshTipz readers, a developer’s download is available as you read this.

If you can’t wait to read this review, head on over to this page to get your hands on it.

Well, I’ve had it loaded up on my iMac for about 48 hours now, and have already come to some conclusions. First off, it’s fast. Like a dress coming off on prom night fast. This version hasn’t been officially tested yet, but my (very) unscientific testing showed it to be 10-15% faster than Safari 4 or Firefox 3.5. As far as rendering content, I haven’t noticed any issues, and when I personally tested it using the Acid3 test, it scored a perfect 100/100. So, bottom-line, as far as the nuts and bolts of internet browsing, a have to rank Chrome on par or better than the current Mac offerings.

Acid3 Test Results

Let’s move on to talk about interface and features. The first thing you’ll notice is the “tabs on top” style layout. This is unique among browsers in that instead of displaying the tabs below the bookmark bar, they appear where normally the title bar would be. This would be a plus if it actually gave you more viewing area, but because they don’t push all the way up to be level with the “close-minimize-resize” button, it really isn’t adding that much. One thing I do really like about the tabs though, is the ability to “drag out” a page. This feature is already in Safari, but trying something similar in Firefox will result in a shortcut on your desktop.

Dragging out a tab

Something else borrowed from the Safari interface is the history based home screen that allows you to see a panorama of your most visited sites. A nice improvement over the Safari version, though, is the ability to display the sites in a list style format. Also on the Chrome home screen you can see recently closed tabs, which is a nice option to get back to a page you accidently closed.

On the “things like Firefox” list is the ability to apply themes to customize the look of your browser window, with a multitude of designs and colors available.

One thing conspicuously missing from the browser is a search field, located in the upper right corner in both Safari and Firefox. Instead, in Chrome this feature is provided by typing non-urls into the address field.

Overall, I think that if you are 100% committed your current browser, I don’t see any “must have” feature in Chrome that will drive you to switch. However, if you are looking for a browser that offers a good mix of both Safari and Firefox, I recommend giving Chrome a try. If nothing else, by downloading this non-official release version, you can say you were one of the first to use Chrome on a Mac.

In the lastest J.D. Power and Associates’ Wireless Consumer Satisfaction survey, the Apple iPhone came away with the top spot. The iPhone increased its position in both the consumer category and business category. This feat is surprising to some, for *battery life and AT&T’s service have both plauged the iPhone, so for it to win the top spot in the J.D. Power survey..that is none the less Beastly.

Now this is not the first time the iPhone has come away with #1, for the iPhone has been looking down at the opposition since 2008. This repeat award encourages me to get an iPhone more and more, for its just good press. It’s like opening up Urban Spoon and looking at two restaurants. One has horrible reviews and the other has amazing reviews…which will you go to?

Let’s break down some of the Facts:

“particularly well in ease of operation, operating system, features, and physical design.”-J.D. Power and Associate

Apple scored 803/1,000 in the Business Category and 811/1,000 in the Consumer Category.

Many factors determined the Score, and Battery Function only came up with 9%

One last note..Palm Pre was not in the top 3 on either of the surveys.
